Among humans for centuries, an immortal specie existed. Connor MacLeod is a member of this specie. Unaware of his powers, he is unable to explain his revival after his apparent death in a clan-fight in the 15th century. This convinces the superstitious villagers to stone him and drive him out of the village. He then encounters another one of his kind, Ramirez, who indoctrinates him in the ways of the immortals. The only way these "immortals" can die is by having their heads cut off. Given the credo that there can only be one, you can imagine a race where everyone tries to chop everyone else's head off. Of course, in such a race, there'll be factions, and MacLeod and Ramirez are one side battling the forces of evil immortals who want to take over the planet and wreak destruction on it. — Rotten Tomatoes

The original Highlander exploded onto our screens in 1986. A novel idea, dropping gods and immortals into the Highlands of Scotland, with big swords, lots of reticent passion, and instructions to chop heads off. The movie suffered from some of the worst accents we had ever heard at the time and some pretty ham acting to boot. But the movie was fun, never intended for Oscar night. And it found its audience. So much so that a further 5 movies were made, a TV Series, and a whole bunch of comic books.

Not being of a tall stature myself, and in lieu of never feeling quite comfortable with dumbells, I once hired the whole series from the DVD store in Oban in an attempt to "man up" in one weekend. Binged out the whole weekend, an orgy of tartan, swords, and tumbling heads. Sunday night I went around to the chippie (that's fish and chips takeaway) and they couldn't understand one word I said. I had morphed by digital osmosis into Connor MacLeod — at least my voice had, my slight reflection in the chippie window totally betrayed my new-found self-image. Bah!

Well the good news is ... the remake is coming! Maybe hitting our screens in 2019. There can be only one! I — don't — think — so! Oh, how I wish the corner DVD store was still in business...
